Bathroom decisions
Planning a shower niche: what should you consider first?
A shower niche keeps toiletries within reach without a projecting shelf. Planning starts before tiling: consider the wall, the items you use and how the recess connects to the waterproof assembly.

1. Decide what you need to store
Gather your everyday bottles, soap and other items. Measure the tallest container and allow space above pump dispensers. Consider who uses the shower and whether everyone can reach the shelf. The finished internal dimensions matter more than the opening before tiling.
2. Assess the wall before committing
Not every wall can accommodate a recess. Available depth, wall construction and existing pipes all affect the options. Have a professional assess whether the wall can be altered, especially where it is structural or shared. Do not assume what is behind the tiles. A service wall or an external shelf may be an alternative; a service wall also takes space from the bathroom.

3. Discuss the complete waterproof connection
Tiles and grout do not by themselves guarantee a waterproof assembly. Ask how the niche, corners and junction with the wall will be incorporated into the chosen waterproofing system, and who will carry out the details. A prefabricated niche or a custom-built solution may work when its components are compatible with the wall assembly. Schlüter’s niche examples show different solutions; always follow the instructions for the system actually selected.
Ask how the bottom surface will shed water and how the detail will be finished. Avoid assuming a universal dimension or slope: have the installer assess the product and conditions. If you want lighting, a qualified professional should assess the electrical installation and selected product.

4. Coordinate dimensions with the tile plan
Discuss the niche location before tile sizes and grout lines are fixed. A grout line can support a balanced appearance, but perfect alignment should not override a suitable wall assembly or usable storage dimensions. Ask how the visible edges, corners and interior will be finished, and how to clean the selected materials.
Questions for your planning discussion
- Which wall is suitable, and what pipes or structural elements are there?
- What are the finished internal dimensions, and can users reach their bottles?
- Which system provides the waterproof connection around the recess?
- How are water shedding, corners, edges and any lighting handled?
- Which work and alternatives are included in the proposal?
